What the calculator does not include

  • Inflation: money in 20 years buys less than today. To see the value in today's money, enter the return minus the expected inflation.
  • Fees: management and trading fees lower the return. Enter the return after fees.
  • Taxes: tax on profits depends on the country and the type of account.
  • Ups and downs: a bad year near the end changes the result more than a bad year at the start.

Questions and answers

What is compound interest?

Profit that earns profit: each year's return is added to the amount and earns a return the next year too. Over many years the growth speeds up.

What is the difference between ROI and the yearly average return?

ROI is the total profit as a share of the amount invested. The yearly average (CAGR) spreads it over the years: 40% in 10 years is about 3.4% a year.

How is the monthly deposit calculated?

The yearly return is turned into an equal monthly return, and each deposit is added at the end of the month. That is why the result matches the yearly rate you entered.

What yearly return should I enter?

There is no right number. It depends on what you invest in, and past returns do not promise future ones. Many people try a few rates (for example 3%, 5% and 7%) to see a range.

Does the calculator include inflation?

No. To see the result in today's money, enter the yearly return minus the expected inflation, for example 7% โˆ’ 2% = 5%.

How do I find out how much to deposit for a goal?

Enter the starting amount, the years and the return, then change the monthly deposit until the value at the end reaches your goal.
